Verbal Judo – Redirecting Behaviour with Words Introduction The author, George J. Thompsons’ book verbal judo was published in July 1984. A 109 paged easy to read and comprehend book which helps in practicing the canon of nonresistance, Verbal Judo is a simple guideline to anger management by using the correct words for solving conflicts. George J. Thomson book is the most effective training to people in their professional fields such as law enforcement, administration etc. The book explains step by step procedures to endure the skills to use them effectively. It reminds of how the skills have been used since thousands of years ago for solving problems. Having the strength to change the situation and turning the tables around can be considered a basic theme of the book. Languages of Motivations, Supervision and Negotiations are explained to get the real feel of the situations. Authors Instinct George J. Thompson emphasizes on setting the aggression free and using the verbal communication to bridge in the conflicting gap. For author it is a must to use oral tactics for self-defense in law enforcement or security. He gives examples from law perspectives to improve their daily skills which might save lives. The author aims to maintain a mental state that will help to originate better outcomes. The presence of words for the author changes moods, perspectives and reactions. Author explains to find peaceful measures and observes through examples and practices. His emphasis is on how resistance to a supreme force is not the solution but flexibility is. The physical attributes of teaching also however are just purely used for the augmentation of verbal techniques. Writing, beneficiary or dreadful? Simple language, productive examples and a new way of teaching makes this books a quick read. The author covers all the necessary topics to make the practice sound more realistic. It is definitely a new optimistic approach to look at things for ones use. Step by step procedure to help though every topic from finding the motivation to do it, till practicing of kind words is an optimal way to approach the topic. The author argues to what circumstances lead to disastrous outcomes, what kind of other positive forces can be used for the betterment and how resistance can be used not just to stop but initiate a productive measure. The Do’s and Don’ts are provided in the topic to clear out what is to practiced and what could have been said/done. It plays with philosophy of controlling stress and finding the balance in the attitudes. The book is entertaining and effective. Components Mastering words isn’t easy, so is the practice. Key components that highlight the chapters are to identify the situations, people’s behavior that erupt the causes of using the persuasive words to control the situation. The law enforcers are thus majorly targeted to perform these tasks to create a healthy community. They not only solve the problem but enhance the professionalism of both the administrators and the officers. Having a firm control over emotions to make solutions for potential threats is a major key. Only then the motivation kicks in, followed by the persuasion and to complete a complete peaceful enforcement. Not using the physical force is the biggest point mentioned NOT to practice. With that the tactics of the book become a personal meditation for the reader. It provides the appealing of persuasion and principals of implementing them as well as the where the situations might not work out and physical measure are mandatory to be taken. The writer achieves his goals to explain his point clearly. Strength and Weaknesses To have identified a practice that is applicable to anytime scale is the achievement of this author. The simplicity of following the topic is the major strength. It is a written for having a true state in mind for just and only the betterment of a persons’ response to tough conflicts. It helps a non reader to be immersed with the right state of mind. The topics are flowing at the right place to merge with each other to give the broader perspective of the topic. It is very practical from a personal perspective to a company’s use of its employees. The sole objective of the books remains the same, but the examples are limited to officers’ workforce. Controlling the behavior is handy in most of the institutions thus the book provided less examples. The readers’ interest can be lowered if the motivation is not there. It can turn out to be very bland. The narration of the book can also be commented on as a bit unnatural. To apply all the rules provided in the book becomes a weakness in itself because it differs from person to person and situation to situation. The consequences also remain less stressed upon as to what are the circumstances in failure of such practices. The tenure in which this book was published was essential and it did cover all the major areas of concern but now the scenario is entirely changed. The relevance of this book in this current era is not that powerful then it previously was. Gauging audience of this age can be quite difficult thus it has lost its significance. The focus of book is primarily on the officers such as policemen so it cannot exemplify all the areas of the society. The scope thus is limited and inadequate for the living in this massively advance technological age. The guidelines still remains a bit practical as the human state of mind prevails around the same circle. Conclusion and Suggestions I found the book very well written, helpful and insightful from page one. It is very effective in approach and highly practical. To relate to the situations different practices should be taken out in order to perform effective verbal encounters. George J. Thompson helps to recognize the ideals of achievement very practically. The book provides the initiative to every reader for trying a different dimension in their own life where the stress can be dealt with better communication. It cleared by brain to and increased my creativity to find solutions to the problems, not just by force but containing my mental balance inside and thinking outside the box. The book is much like a guideline for me. A person finds the motivation in his self. To do well and to make the positive steps to a problem, I am really persuaded to apply it in real life as well. Through the supervision provided in the book of how to contain one’s self in different circumstances I find it new to practice such skills but taking the first step is necessary to any problem. It is truly a medicine of improvement in stress. Easy to follow and very clear cut. It is easy to become bilingual in behavior with the prospects of this book. To reassure the conflicting side is the main task and this book describes is quite well how to maintain composure and flow in. I find it the Language of Reassurance to be of high importance in the book. Using words as tools is highly manageable through this book. It is not just about learning a whole new book of new, clean, sweet words but a psychological path that connects the two sides to think the matter through. It is arguable of how much the examples should be provided but practicing one side is an important step for me in conflict resolution. The authors’ point of view stays strong and clear to have less stress, enhance approach and outcomes with adequate measures for safety. A lot of it is about to face the breakdown of own fears. The book is not a layman’s guide; people having a sound insight of the environment are the basic beneficiaries from this book. It provides a path that how to overcome the communication barriers and lay a positive impact. This book has colossal importance for the students of business communications as it portrays different scenarios in which active participation can lead to accomplishment. Good listening skills should also be kept in mind. Lack of true motivation can really disturb ones mission. Learning all the languages in the book and following the way with the words enabled me and should easily enable anyone to find motivation to face problems gracefully. I find it quite moving that I am working on my motivation to stop emotional stress caused by using words for understanding. Words are the only non-violent way to solve the problem. It is no doubt a great read for law enforcers but more over for anyone who just wants to learn a lot about transmitting their behavior to words. It covers to work with communication skills too. More task work with the book would have been better yet I recommend this book for everyone. Everybody will find something to look on to and work on, from parents to children, in business or law; it is a very handy guide to daily communication problems. Work Cited Thompson, George.
