The union that they created was called NFLPA that its goal was to need a standard wage and other benefits of Nolin order to get the rest of the players of the 28 teams in the NFL sign in they were helped by Don Shula. The NFLPA had inadequate power and influence with the owners of the league and they became very much ineffective in pushing the aims and goals through. An attempt to strike before to the start of the 1956 did not even get off the ground. Players continued to act under weak arrangement with team owners signing bonuses and were unheard of and mostly there were no contracts.

The pay scale was far from the standard beginners earning more than players of several years standing unbeknown to either players (Epstein 23) In 1967, the newly joined NFL was faced by its first strike. The salary was increased to $13,000 and the pension plan that was more favorably pension was approved. It dint takes long for the NFLPA to discover that it was important to fix players salaries to revenues. One of the aims for the ’77 CBA was to get 55% of the gross revenue given to the players, but the issue did not convince the NFLPA.

Revenue increased very fast and the decision was confirmed to be reckless. It did not take long before the players went on strike; this made the league reject seven games during the season that was there in 1982.The players still claimed the 55% rule and still the owners do not want and it happened that when the strike ended nothing much had changed. Later an agreement was reached and both sides made an agreement to give the players more money, on top of their benefits. The cloud over contracts was also removed and this went until the 1987 (Epstein 76) A few weeks into the 1987 season, there was a strike by the NFL players, their hope was to win the right to free agency and to assure themselves a bigger slice of the leagues increasing revenue pie.
