Law Personal ment At the end of the year 2003, there were drastic changes in Iraq that affected the people of Iraq. Kurdistan region is a part of Iraq that was the most affected. These changes were brought about by the success of the United States in the operation freedom of the Iraqi people. Kurdistan region was more affected by the changes compared to other regions in Iraq because it became a federal region according to the new constitution of the country. This simply means that Kurdistan region had the rights to have its own regional government, including its own parliament, political plan, and economic plan. Nevertheless, according to the constitution, the most important right that Kurdistan region had was the right to exploit its own natural resources. This right led to Kurdistan region being a place where major energy companies wanted to explore and invest in the region’s natural resources such as oil and gas. The energy business became large and had high demand therefore there arose the need for professionals such as lawyers to help with the formulation of contracts and for setting out various laws regarding energy. In my work experience at a law firm, I realized that I have to improve certain skills. These skills include acquiring knowledge on English as a language, legal writing skills, ability to do legal research based on international standards and communication skills with international lawyers and managers. I can only acquire these skills academically. This is mainly the chief reason why I desire an LL.M. degree in a country that uses English as its national language. I chose to do law because I have a passion for this profession. According to me, it as a method to lend a hand to people in their legal matters and become a legal adviser to many people as well. In my country, there is lack of adequate information and legal knowledge regarding energy. An LL.M. in energy degree will equip me with the right information that I can use to help my country with when it comes to legal matters concerning energy. I will have the ability to assist my nation expand its international market by formulating the correct legal contracts required, advising the government on legal matters concerning energy, and ensuring that my country is not exploited by other countries that want to invest in the energy business. In a this realm, I will be able to help the country understand the Iraqi people due to my acquired communication skills. I look forward to to acquiring skills that will aid me improve my ability as a professional. These abilities include communication skills, legal writing skills and adequate information on energy. The University of Tulsa has a great programme that includes all the subjects that I want to study. Since it is a school that is based in a country that speaks English, I will be able to improve my English communication skills. I have been in Iraq and have worked for law firms in Iraq. I will be able to give professors and fellow students in the school first hand and accurate information about energy in the Kurdistan region. I chose this particular LL.M programme because of the specialization in energy which is what I am interested in. I chose the school because it has professors that are very qualified and are aware of Iraq and the Kurdistan energy sector. The University of Tulsa has very reasonable tuition fees and this makes it affordable for me to study the programme in this school. The reputation of the school precedes itself as it is known very well for the quality of education and its cultural diversity. My specific interest in this school is its LL.M in energy degree as it is among the very few universities that offers this programme. I would love to become a reputable lawyer in my profession. I have several short-term goals, which include; being able to continue my career as a lawyer and also become an excellent lawyer in energy law in Iraq; become a legal advisor to the government of the Kurdistan region and have the ability to advise them on legal issues concerning oil gas, guide the government during legislation of new legislation associated to the energy sector and solve problems that may arise between the government and international energy companies; to volunteer in academic lectures in the universities in Kurdistan to undergraduate law students; to work together with the Iraqi-Kurdistan bar association and open workshops that will improve the legal English skills and legal issues on energy of the current lawyers; lastly, to be able to act as the link between the US law firms, the energy companies and the Kurdistan government in order to improve the business opportunities of the Kurdistan region. My long-term goals are to take up a senior position in the ministry of natural resource of the Kurdistan region and to be the most sought after lawyer and legal advisor that represent the country of Iraq in international organizations. After completing my degree, I hope to be able to use the skills that I will have acquired to help my government on legal issues regarding the energy sector. I also expect to convey my acquaintance to my country since there is a problem of inadequate information in the country regarding legal issues that pertain to the energy sector. I am a very honest person. I am also hardworking, a quick learner, a team player and ambitious. I possess very great decision-making skills, I can work in any environment and I do my work very diligently. My academic interests are mainly business administration and law. I also want to improve my knowledge on law in energy and my English communication skills. I have been able to nurture some of my academic interests by acquiring a bachelors in business administration and a bachelors in law as well. I have demonstrated intellectual curiosity by seeking to gain more knowledge on law that pertains to the energy sector. I did a batch of pro-bono job while I was still an undergraduate in the law school. I have been practicing corporate law in a multinational law firm since I graduated from law school. I would love to pursue an LL.M. in energy degree in order to improve my professional skills as a lawyer and provide better quality of law to my country.
