TITLE: NETWORK PERFORMANCE AND DYNAMIC OD WITH BLUETOOTH DATA AND WI-FI Name: School of Civil Engineering & Built Environment, Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane 4000, Australia . & School of Environmental and Earth Sciences, Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane 4000, Australia . Aim This dissertation seeks to: Give a comprehensive knowledge on Personal Area Network interface features and devices (PANs) Explore how Blue tooth and Wi-Fi works Give an overview devices involved in wireless connection Carry out a traffic flow tests within the campus using Blue tooth Enabling Objectives Analyse existing literature dealing Personal Area Network interface features and devices Highlight the need for conserving the available water resources in Australia Collecting and analysis of information on the traffic flow tests within the campus using Blue tooth Discuss the applications of PANs Scope Summary of the science existing literature dealing Personal Area Network interface features and devices experiment was determining the travel time for the pedestrians who cross the Victoria bridge Limitations The dissertation does in- depth analysis of the working principle of both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi devices It draws literature from both scientific and non- scientific studies The paper relied heavily on secondary data available from secondary sources Literature Review 1. Bluetooth Communication In these modern days devices such as smart phones have been largely equipped with network connection interfaces such as Bluetooth, WIFI, and cellular interfaces. Table 1: Characteristics of various network connection interfaces Blue tooth is a proprietary open network standard, which forms personalised area networks (PAN) with increased security levels. This makes it possible for two wireless devices (piconets) to connect. Form either single slave, multiple slave or scatter net as shown in figure 1 below Figure 1: Single-slave piconet (a), multiple-slave piconet and scatternet (c) In collecting data Bluetooth can be embedded on cell phones, computers, and vehicles in navigation systems etc. A typical illustration is wheretwo Bluetooth modules are set up in traffic signal cabinets as shown in figure 2 below. Figure 2: Bluetooth Traffic Monitoring Concept Figure 3: some of Bluetooth connection configurations Other applications of Blue tooth technology include: Driver Behaviour studies Dynamic OD matrices estimation Pedestrian Tracking Speed measurement Travel Pattern analysis Travel time measurement In a Bluetooth system one device acts as the master while the other devices becomes the slaves. This is identical to USB system used in many comp. systems. Figure 4 below shows a typical radio transmission by Bluetooth with a frequency of between 2.4 and 2.43GHz Figure 4: Bluetooth Operating Diagram Blue Tooth Scanners They are used to detect and verify Bluetooth Waves. It consists of antenna, battery, inbuilt memory and Ethernet connectivity to a PC. Blue compass scanner is a device that has the capacity of verifying both WI-FI waves and Bluetooth waves. Figure 5: blue compass scanner Figure 6: Plugged In Bluetooth scanner device Other types of Bluetooth scanners are the Barcode scanner used in shopping malls Figure 7 Barcode scanner Wi-Fi Range experiment From an experiment carried out revealed the Wi-Fi model detection capacity as shown in figure below Figure 8: Detection capacity 2. Development of the WI- FI networks Of late with technology advancement, WI-Fi interface are gaining popularity over Bluetooth due to their: High Density, high quality accurate travels times. Their shortcoming however, is the high idle power consumption. In order for Wi-Fi system to work, it is crucial to have a wireless adapter which emits frequency of between 2.4 and 5hz depending on data transmitted. Areas with WI-Fi enabled connectivity are called hotspots. Wi- FI scanners Personalized connection devised are manufactured by makers electronic manufactures, however the popular ones are listed below Figure 9: Image of a Wi-Fi scanner In order for connectivity to be completed, the Wi-Fi router must be connected to the network and a software tool called WirelessMon is adopted in monitoring the Wi-Fi status of the adapters Figure 10: Typical WirelessMon Tool In case of a technical breakdown Metageek Wi-Spy Range can be used to used to scan, anlyse and troubleshoot the Wi-Fi networks. It tracks and scans all the radio activity from Wi-Fi systems in a location Figure 11: Metageek Wi-SPY AND Screenshot from chanalyzer software In the market, customers posses a skewed preferences on personalized network interface devices as shown below. Execution of Work The dissertation was centred on Bluetooth data and Wi-Fi The information and data used in the dissertation was collected from secondary scholarly sources i.e. internet sources. The paper starts with review of the technologic development most of the people use very developed mobile phones and other devices The research methodology develops a chronology of empirical findings on personal area networks (PANs) with high levels of security such as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi network interfaces.. The paper also points how both Bluetooth and a Wi-Fi system works as well as the advantage of the latter over the former. Finally the paper deals with the recommendations and conclusion basedof the existing information and data as the most up to date research outcomes and also the propositions for conducting future research. Research Significance MAJOR problem that your project addresses This paper scrutinizes the recent technological advances in personal area networks (PANs). i.e. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, It is points out the various applications of the two network interfaces as well as their limitations. Research Methodology This paper discusses the personal Area Network (PANs) devices i.e. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Tests are carried out to determine the range at which a Bluetooth and Wi-Fi devices can transmit or receive data, the paper also seeks to determine the canning interval period Real data was collected from bus stops between QUT kelvin grove campus and QUT gardens point campus. The data analysed for: Number of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi observations at the bus stop on Alice street and at intersection and Matched the device ID at musk avenue kelvin grove stop to estimate the travel time between bus stops. Planning of Work The purpose of this experiment was determining the travel time for the pedestrians who cross the victoria bridge Bluetooth devices were installed at the cultural centre and in front of the Casino Figure 13: Survey route between Casino and cultural centre 19 realistic data picked from the results and it’s shown that the average travel time between casino and cultural centre is 17 min and 37 seconds. From the results there were obtained 5462 Wi-Fi devices and 199 Bluetooth devices. Results were as follows: Figure 14: number of BT vs. Wi-Fi Devices Figure 15: Average travel time: 17:37 mins Conclusions Bluetooth method in collecting data for real life is still easy and cheap Wi- Fi high quality, high density and accurate travel times Bluetooth can be applicable in collecting traffic flow data It is evident that the key to future data collection lies with Bluetooth technology. Recommendations Proper tests and surveys done still requires More research and improvement such as improvement of detectors, building a proper software could be easy to analyze the data, More extended life battery is required Suggested Future studies More research is needed to counter the effects of other Bluetooth devices in the scan radius Acknowledgement Entire academic staff of the School of Civil Engineering & Built Environment, Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane Read More
