Back in 2008, the gross output of the telecommunications sector was HK$ 57.1 billion, an increase of 8.76 percent over that of 2007 (Information Services Department 2010). Particularly in the 3G mobile service sector in Hong Kong, decisions made by the telecommunications operators to enter into merger and acquisition agreements indicate the tight market competition within the telecommunication industry.  Specifically, the mobile business of Hutchison Telecommunications International Limited (HTIL) is being managed by Hutchison Telecommunications (Hong Kong) Limited (HTHK); while Hutchison Global Communication Limited (HGC) owns and operates the fixed-line license and network.

HTIL has successfully spun off its Hong Kong and Macau operations in May 2009. Since then, the company was listed on Hong Kong Stock Exchange under the corporate name of Hutchison Telecommunications Hong Kong Holdings Limited (HTHKHL). To avoid confusion, this study will purposely refer to the company as “Hutchison Telecom”.             To enable the readers to have a better understanding of the competitive advantages of Hutchison Telecom as compared to its close competitors within the telecommunication industry in Hong Kong, the researcher will first discuss its market structure followed by discussing the telecommunication services offered in Hong Kong.

Eventually, Porter’s five forces framework will be used in examining the overall telecommunication industry in Hong Kong. The rationale for the need to discuss the market structure, telecommunication services, and examine how the telecommunication industry in Hong Kong function as a whole is to allow the readers to have a better understanding of the competitive advantages of Hutchison Telecom when it comes to the provision of mobile services has over its close rivals.             Since this study focuses on analyzing the competitive advantages of Hutchison Telecom particularly with regards to its mobile services, it is necessary to discuss and go through the history and corporate background of Hutchison Telecommunications International Limited (HTIL).
