Extract of sample "Concentration of Iron and Chlorine in Water Samples"

Lab report: Determination of concentration of iron and chlorine in water samples PURPOSE The main aim of this experiment was to compare the concentration of iron and chlorine in different water samples.METHODSIron, Total (0 TO 3.00mg/L). The program number for iron was entered and then 265 was pressed. The wavelength dial was rotated and 510nm was selected. The cell was then filled with 25 ml of lake water. The content of one Ferro Ver Iron pillow reagent powder was then added and the readings were taken The same procedure was repeated for secondary treatment water.

Chlorine, total. The program number for chlorine was entered and then 265 was pressed. The wavelength dial was rotated and 530 nm was selected. The cell was then filled with 25 ml of pool water. The content of one DPD total chlorine powder pillow powder was then added and the readings were taken The same procedure was repeated for tap water.RESULTSIron 1- lake water = 0.043 ppm2- secondary treatment water = 0.043 ppm chlorine total 1- total chlorine pool water = 1.06 ppm2- total chlorine tap water = 0.

05 ppm chlorine free 1- pool water free blank = 1.91 ppm2- tap water free blank = 0.05 ppmDISCUSSIONThe concentrations areIron 1- lake water = 0.043 ppm= 0.000043 g/L = 0.000043/55.585 mol/L= 7.736 * 10-7 mol/L2- secondary treatment water = 0.043 ppm=0.000043 g/L= 7.736 * 10-7 mol/LThe atomic weight of Fe is 55.585.Chlorine total 1- total chlorine pool water = 1.06 ppm= 2.99 * 10-5 mol/L2- total chlorine tap water = 0.05 ppm = 1.41 mol/LThe atomic weight of Cl is 35.453. Chlorine-free 1- pool water free blank = 1.91 ppm= 5.39 * 10-5 mol/L2- tap water free blank = 0.05 ppm= 1.41*10-5 mol/L In conclusion, the concentration of iron in the Lake Water and secondary treatment water is the same.

While the total chlorine water in pool water is higher than in tap water. This may be because of the hypochlorous acid which is added to the swimming pool to prevent bacterial infection. However, the blanks chlorine concentration was slightly high than the samples this may have been brought about by contamination.
